The hot (newish) trend among Medspas and celebrities is the 24 carat gold facial. This treatment includes the application of a facial mask made with 24 carat gold foil.??Plus, it makes for a badass selfie pic…
They are supposed to be magical for improving skin texture, tone, appearance, redness, elasticity, wrinkles, dark spots, and hydration. After all, Cleopatra did it every night to maintain her beauty.?
TRUTH: your skin will benefit from products used CONSISTENTLY, not just a mask thrown in on a Saturday night.?Sure, they will compliment your skin care routine, but aren’t the magic elixir to overnight infinite youth.
I did a little research on mask’s that combine hyaluronic acid, bee venom, collagen, massage or antioxidants and incorporate with 24 carat gold. Considering these facials can cost between $380 and $1200,? my question is, whether or not there is any science behind the claims in the advertisements? Is it really worth that much money?
Most skin care specialists would share my opinion that the hyaluronic acid, collagen or massage you received with the gold at your facial had just as much benefit (if not more) than the actual gold itself.? And, most experts agree that the science behind gold as a collagen builder or antioxidant is lacking.
In order for gold to penetrate into the skin it would have to be sooo small, we’re talking like a nanoparticle. Most of the gold products remain on the surface of the skin, but it does look pretty on your face!?
FUN FACT: gold was named the “contact allergen of the year” by the American Contact Dermatitis Society.? This means some lucky patients will be allergic to gold when applied to the skin.
In my professional opinion, I do not see the benefit of a 24 carat gold facial. If nothing else, the gold facial can be considered a decadent indication of how much money we are willing to spend on anti-aging products. If your looking for a killer selfie, I do think your money could be better spent on some tried and true products and procedures such as cold cream, lip injections, essential oils, retinoids and growth factors.❤️
