AUSTIN BOTOX TMJ
Austin BOTOX is used as an alternative treatment for TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorders and associated jaw tension and pain. When Botox is injected into facial muscles that are causing soreness and discomfort, it can relieve TMJ pain and jaw tension.
Botox injections often eliminate headaches resulting from teeth grinding and Bruxism.
HOW CAN BOTOX HELP TMJ & BRUXISM?
Located on both sides of the head at the point where the jawbone meets the skull, the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is used during talking, eating, swallowing, and other everyday activities. If this joint becomes displaced or is overworked through excessive teeth grinding, a person may suffer severe tension headaches, as well as sharp pain in the jaw.
BOTOX® relieves jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage in the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain. This alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension is usually quick, straightforward, and effective.
HOW LONG BEFORE I SEE RELIEF FROM TMJ
Some patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two days of their first treatment, although relief can take up to a week for others.
WHAT AREAS ARE AFFECTED WITH TMJ BOTOX
Only the areas injected with Botox will be “relaxed.” Botox treatment for TMJ therapy does not spread to other areas.
The injections are mainly in the masseter (jaw) muscle, but additional sites may be injected with Botox depending on the severity of pain and if you also get headaches.
HOW LONG DOES A TMJ BOTOX TREATMENT TAKE?
The length of the Botox treatment is typically around 15 minutes.
IS BOTOX FOR TMJ PAINFUL?
The pain associated with the Botox TMJ Treatment procedure has been described as being similar to a bug bite. Everyone tolerates it really well.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER BOTOX FOR TMJ TREATMENT
After the Botox TMJ Treatment muscle tenderness will start to disappear and soften over the next few days. This is not a treatment that typically bruises, but as with any treatment involving a needle, it’s possible.
WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE AFTER BOTOX?
Botox is non-surgical, so patients can return to normal activities immediately.
However, to avoid spreading the toxin to other muscles, patients should not rub or massage the area injected with Botox. Also, no working out for 24-hours.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF BOTOX FOR TMJ INJECTIONS?
The most common reported side-effects of Botox treatment are headaches and bruising.
Another limitation to Botox® injection for TMJ treatments is that there is a possibility of developing antibodies that would render the TMJ treatments less and less effective over time. Botox injection treatments should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation.
HOW MANY UNITS OF BOTOX FOR TMJ?
Kristin uses anywhere from 15-25units on each side depending on your symptoms and severity.
WHAT IS THE COST FOR BOTOX FOR TMJ?
Plan on spending anywhere from $300-$500 for a TMJ Botox treatment.
